Q: What qualifies someone as a refugee or asylum seeker?
A: According to the UN Refugee Agency, a refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. An asylum seeker is someone whose request for sanctuary has yet to be processed while they are already physically in the country.
Q: Why would somebody voluntarily leave their home and illegally enter another country?
A: Refugees are typically fleeing from racial, religious, or ethnic persecution and violence. They may also be from countries that are the sites of international, drug, or gang wars. Fleeing their home country for a safer one is typically the last option for displaced people.
Q: Why can’t they just provide for themselves?
A: Refugees and asylum seekers leave mostly all their belongings behind when they leave their homes. When they finally are released from detention, these people have nothing.
